What is reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a method of exercise that originated from classical Pilates, which was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Joseph Pilates, a German-born physical trainer, created the Pilates method as a way to rehabilitate injured soldiers during World War I. While interned in England, he began experimenting with springs and straps from hospital beds to help bedridden patients rebuild their strength and mobility. This innovation laid the foundation for what would become the Reformer machine.

After the war, Joseph Pilates moved to New York City in the 1920s, where he opened his first studio. His method gained popularity, particularly among dancers, athletes, and performers, due to its focus on core strength, flexibility, and alignment. The Reformer—a bed-like frame equipped with a sliding carriage, springs, straps, and pulleys—allowed for low-impact, controlled movements that could be adjusted for varying levels of resistance and difficulty.

Over the decades, Reformer Pilates evolved and spread globally, becoming a key element of Pilates practice. It is now widely used for rehabilitation, strength training, injury prevention, and overall fitness, appealing to people of all ages and fitness levels. Modern Reformer Pilates combines Joseph Pilates' original principles—breath, control, precision, centering, flow, and concentration—with contemporary exercise science, making it a versatile and effective workout.
